The Beauceron is a large, solid and athletic dog, and gives the
impression of strength and readiness to work. The coat is short
with longer areas on the hind quarters and the tail. The Beauceron
is double coated with a harsh outer coat and fluffy undercoat for
protection from the weather. Colours are black and tan or tricolour
(grey, black and tan) no white should be visible. A distinctive
feature of the Beauceron are the double dew claws on the back feet
giving a total of 6 toes on each of the rear legs. The Beauceron
is a loyal, brave, faithful and highly intelligent breed able to
master just about any working task. They are a natural guard dog
and instinctive herders - something that must be borne in mind during
their socialisation and training, firm and thorough training is
absolutely essential from an early age to produce a family orientated
dog. They are generally good with other pets provided they are socialised
properly at an early age and are very good with children though
naturally play with very small children should be supervised purely
because of the size of the dog and the potential to knock little
ones over.
